Let's bring ranked choice voting to Hopkins! Ranked choice voting (RCV) is a simple change to our ballot that empowers voters by allowing us to rank candidates 1-2-3.
RCV makes elections more inclusive and representative of the community. Under RCV, women and people of color have a fairer chance and can run and win without worrying about splitting votes with similar candidates. Candidates are also incentivized to run positive campaigns, and to earn a true majority of voter support to win.
Our neighbors in St. Louis Park, Minnetonka, Bloomington, Minneapolis, and Saint Paul already use RCV. Let's empower our voters by joining the club!
The Petition & What Comes Next
In June, we submitted nearly 1,000 signatures (more than twice the number needed) to the City Clerk. However, the City Council declined to put the question on the ballot, citing administrative challenges. Instead, the Council passed a resolution that expressed a commitment to resolving those challenges, as well as support for the Local Voices, Local Choices Act at the state legislature. Also known as the RCV Local Option bill, the legislation would clear up any remaining obstacles to cities like ours choosing to use RCV.
We are optimistic that the RCV Local Option bill will pass in next year’s legislative session. When it does, we’ll be back at work to bring RCV to Hopkins!
